Hi all. Welcome to the Tune Up. This week will see a double edition – you lucky things – where we’re bringing you up to speed with the most breaking news in social over the past two weeks. Enjoy.

Fortune 500 companies taking to social media

Fortune 500 companies are continuing to grow their various social presences, with Twitter the most in demand of all. Seemingly, 77% now have active Twitter accounts, compared to 70% in 2012. The microblogging platform is followed by Facebook which placed 2nd, with YouTube in 3rd. Surprisingly, Google+ came in 4th with 35%, ahead of company blogs with 34%.

Facebook’s mobile user base up by 20%

Facebook’s mobile user base has increased by 22% in the UK and 18% in the USA over the last year, according to figures released by the social network. On average, smartphone users check Facebook’s mobile app between 10-15 times a day, with 26 million of Facebook’s 33 million UK users (almost 80%) accessing the site via mobile.

Facebook roll out photo comments to pages

Facebook photo comments are now enabled for pages as well as individuals, meaning that people can post photos in response to page comments and page admins can make use of the system, too. The system has been available to personal users for around a month now – it will be interesting to see how quickly pages take advantage of the option.

Captain Morgan among first brands to capitalize on Foursquare’s new post check-in ads

Post check-in ads are ads served to users immediately after they check in at certain locations. Foursquare launched the ads at the start of July and Captain Morgan is one of the first brands aboard. Foursquare users who check in at certain bars, nightclubs or restaurants will be served an ad suggesting they order a “Captain and cola,” “Captain and ginger” or “Captain mojito.” Pricing for post-check-in ads is on a per action basis, meaning brands are only charged when a user taps or saves the ad. Foursquare has not as yet commented on how much a post check-in ad campaign costs.

Apple hiring to build iWatch

According to the FT, Apple is on a hiring spree for new employees to help develop its smart watch. Sources also indicate that the rumored device may not appear until late next year. Murmurings of an Apple smart watch have been circulating for a little while. They were re-ignited earlier this month when it was revealed that Apple had hired Paul Deneve, formerly the CEO of YSL (covered previously in a previous week in social update), to work on special projects. Speculation suggested he may involved with the iWatch and other wearable computing projects at Apple. We look forward to seeing how the devise develops within the social media marketplace.
